5 ways honey can improve your skin

What do we love about honey? Basically everything. It’s a great natural sweetener, it’s been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease as well as many other ailments, boosts one’s immune system, and it’s even great for your skin. Seriously, honey is a one-stop wonder, and if you haven’t gotten on the honey train yet, here’s your chance!

Below are 5 ways honey is super beneficial for your skin, whether you’re fighting acne, signs of aging, or just want to keep that natural healthy glow we all strive for.

1. Anti-aging

Honey is packed to the brim with antioxidants, vitamins, and amino acids, making it a great natural beauty and health refresher. Nowadays, many beauty products contain honey for a multitude of beauty concerns, including aging. Look for a cleanser with honey as an ingredient to help repair, exfoliate, and moisturize tired skin for a healthy, youthful glow.

Moister is the key to anti-aging, so take your honey game to the next level by making an extra hydrating honey avocado mask:

1/2 small ripe avocado
1 tbs honey

Mix the avocado and honey in a small bowl and spread onto face with your fingertips. Allow the mask to set for about 15 minutes before washing with warm water.

2. Protects against harmful UV rays

With the sun finally out and shining, we’ve got UV rays on the brain. While nothing beats daily application of sunscreen (real talk: apply it every single day, even if you aren’t lounging by the pool), honey is rich in antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that are effective in protecting your skin from harmful UV rays while also helping the skin’s ability to rejuvenate, pronto!

3. Restores skin post-sunburn

If you accidentally got a little sunburn after a day on the beach, reach for the honey! Honey is a great natural ingredient that has been used as a topical burn salve since the Egyptian days. It’s great at restoring hydration to the deepest layers of skin and has anti-inflammatory properties that are perfect for aiding mild or harsh sunburns.

If you want to kick it up a notch, mix one part honey with two parts aloe vera for an ultra soothing mixture for your skin, trust us, your skin will thank you.

4. Fights acne

Problematic skin can really be the pits, but honey is here to help! Possibly honey’s best skincare benefit is it’s antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that eliminate bacteria that can lead to breakouts. It’s also perfect for sensitive skin and has amazing anti-inflammatory properties that help calm redness and irritation that can be caused by acne. A cleanser containing honey is a perfect solution for acne-prone skin.

5. Deep cleans pores

Honey is incredible at deep cleaning your pores, which is why it’s a great ingredient for a cleanser or serum. It absorbs impurities from deep down and tightens pores, making it an ideal cleansing agent. Plus, the antibacterial properties we talked about earlier prevent bacterial buildup that can lead to pesky skin imbalances.

For a deep clean, try a honey and cinnamon mask:

3 tbs honey
2 tbs ground cinnamon

Mix the cinnamon and honey in a small bowl and spread onto face with your fingertips. Allow the mask to set for about 20 minutes before washing with warm water.  This mask can be applied weekly.

Honestly, we could spend the next two days telling you about all benefits honey related. Honey can also be directly applied to the skin, so when it doubt, put some honey on it.
